About this blog

This blog is about the daily activities in a busy typewriter shop. I want to share with you the many interesting people who come in here, the beautiful machines I get and most of all the great typewriter stories that people share with me!

A Royal Rainbow

It"s the first time I've had this many colors together at once.

1957 Voss Deluxe Serial #139742

A typical machine in need of cleaning and repairs.

And a typical after- all cleaned up and ready to use.

  1. Another very fun update, thanks.

I'm glad you got to experience a Voss firsthand. Now you see why I'm kinda obsessed with these guys.

Interesting that you can't find enough good Underwood 5's. I suppose the nasty ones are common but there are few that have survived in top condition.

  2. Thanks for sharing these, Tom.

Great makeover on that Underwood 5, glad someone bought it. I've seen a couple of those Voss machines from Richard's collection. They're cool in a "muscular" sort of way, I could see them working well for some serious typing.

Can't help but think how lucky Arlington folks are to have a neighbor like you. WIll you consider moving to Chicago? ( :

  3. Richard- I was extremely impressed with the Voss. I actually care more about how it's built than how it looks. I love Underwood No.5's but I get so disappointed when I see too many rust buckets and not enough good ones. Welcome home.
    London looked awesome.

Ton- Thanks! I love New England but I would definitely visit someday. I look forward to meeting you sometime soon.

  4. Those are some wonderful looking Royal Ps. I think Cameron has a brown one too.

The Voss looks quite nice to as does the Underwood 5.

Thanks for sharing the story and the really cool ads.

  5. I love to read your posts. It's good to see that there's still life in typewriter shops (and sneak peek!).

  6. Hello, I have a royal typewriter that needs repair and I'm having trouble finding somewhere to take it in my area. I came across this blog. Does anyone know of a typewriter repair shop in the southern NJ or Philadelphia area? Thanks!

  7. I recently acquired both versions of Royal's woodgrain finished portables (spools uncovered and covered). What kind of wax do you recommend for protecting their finish?
