Tales From Yosemite

 THE END

  1. A very enjoyable post, Tom. Reading the 1922 edition of Yosemite Nature Notes took me back to memories of visiting the park with my parents, even though that would have been in the late 1950's. But the "Bear Pits", an open dump where bears foraged for food, was still in operation, as were the evening firefall. Although both were entertaining spectacles, they have since ceased in respect for wildlife and the landscape. Hopefully in the future a way to continue to improve the balance between the needs of a small city versus a return to a natural environment will be found.

  2. My family went to Yosemite every summer for about 30 years straight, so I love the place. Thanks for sharing this.

Typewriters and national parks do have a connection: a manual typewriter is a great way to write when you're in the wilderness! A colleague of mine spends a lot of time in Yellowstone every year and brings a Smith-Corona.

  3. Great post. Congratulations on your opportunity to work with Steve. I hope he can reschedule his trip and visit your shop. It is amazing how you wanted to work in Yosemite and he has found interest in a typewirter. Maybe he will become a Typosphereian.

I really enjoyed the YNNs. The part of the redwing blackbirds reminded me of our recent trip. One of the few things Mrs. M can enjoy in the outdoors is bird watching and we saw plenty including many redwinged blackbirds.

  4. TonysVision- I'm so glad you enjoyed the post and it brought back good memories. I hope we right by maintaining one of our greatest resources.

Richard- You are so lucky to have that great childhood memory growing up. For my family, it was camping in the White Mountains in NH for two weeks every summer growing up. I hope to visit Yosemite someday. Thanks!

Bill M- Glad you enjoyed it Bill. I love bird watching too. When we moved into our current house which abuts a state forest 17 years ago. A bird watchers paradise. Thanks.

  5. As a rock climbing youth me and my pals saw Yosemite as an almost mythological place with intimidating routes on El Cap and Half Dome a-plenty to fire our imaginations. Thanks for the links to Steve's films, surely one of the best jobs in the world, alongside yours of course :-) Thanks for all this and a Very Happy Typewriter Day to you.

  6. Rob- Thanks! Sounds like you enjoyed Steve's films. I went rock climbing once, Cathedral Ledge in the White Mountains of N.H. As I stood at the bottom looking up, my knees were shaking so bad but I did it anyway and it was a huge thrill. Can't imagine the guts it takes to do a world class climb like El Cap.

  7. Is it too late for the type-out, or did I miss it? Is there/was there a spring type out this year?

  8. Mr. Smith- There was no spring Type-Out this year because of a back injury. There will be a fall Type-Out in mid-September. I'll post the notice a month early. Thanks.
