Another Vogue Beauty

You think a Smith Corona is in the case, then you open it up.

This was probably stored in a basement for 40 years.

Even the carrying case had rotted to pieces.

  1. The black keys looks so incredible on that Royal, though. Honestly it may be the most attractive one of the first style that I have ever seen!

That looks like it's very similar to the Book typestyle. The capitals S and R are especially distinctive. It is one of my most-wanted typefaces along with Vogue!

Book is a bit odd as far as typefaces go. It seems to not have been introduced until later in Royal's history, 50s or so, but its origins lie more in the late 19th century. I have a set of alphabet stamps from that era sharing many similar traits (The capitals S and R particularly)

  2. That Royal 1 is super. I have longed for one, especially with vogue typeface for a long time.

Thanks for the link to the story.

  3. Despite the ribbon tin's name, this entry is full of SMUT: alluring beauty shots of typewriters and typefaces. At least that rustbucket slightly cools my ardor.

I think the Kremlin policy is 100% serious and smart.

  4. Nick- Thanks for your comments and info. The QDL type does have an old world quality to it.

Bill- I'm with you on the Royal 1, I want one too! Thanks.

Richard- Your comments are full of SPINK too! There's nothing sadder than a rustbucket. Thanks. I'm enjoying your reporting from England.

  6. I had to smile at that Royal Model 'O'. You wouldn't believe how many e-mails I get with similar pictures attached and the plaintive message, 'I think this needs servicing, how much would you charge ?' !!!!

  7. Janet- Royal used the tilted "e" on some machines like the Futura 800 in the early 60's. Thanks!

thetypewriterman- Hey Tom, I get a lot of people bringing those rustbuckets into the shop and asking if I'll buy it from them. Never ceases to amaze me! Thanks for commenting. Hope you're still busy.

    1. Hello Tom ! I'm getting ridiculously busy. Honestly thinking of going full-time if this continues. I was even interviewed on BBC World News about the Russian typewriter story ! Now Film/TV people have started to realise that I am a good source of information and repairs !
