Rubber Feet, Grommets and Washers...Oh My!

Four new feet makes a world of difference.

It's easy to replace these broken rubber parts.

IBM Selectric feet make great replacement bumpers.

Made from parts of a Royal KMM.

Royal will compare itself to anything!

  3. Sorry about the mess. Let's do this again.

Thanks for the post, I really learned a lot. That's an awesome sculpture, it looks like a T-Rex with the mandibles of a Fire Ant.

  4. A useful and interesting post. Typewriters have been getting more and more hip for wedding invitations and guestbooks. I like the idea that the couple will continue to use the machine once they're married.

  5. Thanks Tom, folks are always getting married. After scrubbing and buffing my Underwood 4 (as a pro, I'll guess you wonder 'Why DO they do that?') the feet really needed replacement. The back feet were quashed lumps of liquorice and the front were brittle and only JUST enough remained to secure them in the case. Rubber door bumpers from my box of odds and ends are almost perfect replacements. I just need to put a groove in for the two catches. Car parts shops often stock rubber grommets.

Richard- Thanks as usual. Congrats on your type-in. Matt filled me in.

Rob- Thanks for the tip on car parts stores. I'll check that out this week.

  7. The tip on replacing the two rear rubber bumpers with washers for the Olympia SM3 is excellent. I didn't even realize those parts were there until I looked at my two SM3's and, sure enough, there were squashed/crumbling rubber bumpers on both of them. I'm looking forward to replacing them and testing the difference. Thanks Tom!

  8. Excellent and timely. Just replaced the feet on my Underwood Noiseless 77, but these are so oddly shaped they pretty much had to come from another machine (and Alan Seaver came up with some for me - thanks, Alan!). But I have some other machines with more standard (that is, round) feet that could use replacement.
